1. Positive Opportunities for Women Engineers Retention
Contact Name: Susan Cavin Organization:New Jersey Institute of Technology

The positive opportunities for Women Engineer's Retention (POWER) program concluded a study of five New Jersey colleges to identify the types of gender issues that can affect a woman's ability to achieve in engineering and science disciplines, to develop an action plan to increase female retention in these programs, and to improve the campus climate for women and minorities.

The POWER study is first of its kind in New Jersey to focus on women in engineering at both community college and university levels. The survey has provided an insight on issues ranging from role models and perceptions of classroom behavior to how women viewed themselves during childhood and kinds of toys they preferred. The left frame provides these survey results as well as an interactive game illustrating the feeling of being a women engineer. The game is designed as a gender role switch game.
